Sustainability

At COMO Uma Canggu, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We work actively to preserve the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Bali, whether through innovative waste management solutions, partnerships with local artisans, or honouring traditional blessings and festivals across our resort.

Awards

We are proud to have achieved an EarthCheck Silver Certification in December 2024, an internationally recognised benchmark for sustainable tourism. This accomplishment celebrates not only our current sustainability efforts, but our promise to keep protecting the planet long into the future.

IN-ROOM

Our rooms are designed to deliver luxury while minimising environmental impact, whether that’s through reduced water usage or reusable in-room amenities.

Water and Energy Conservation

We recycle 80 per cent of our total water consumption, converting it to greywater for garden irrigation.

Our IPTV homepage features educational content on energy and water conservation, encouraging guests to take small but impactful actions towards sustainability during their stay.

For Little Ones

We provide sustainable baby amenities crafted with locally sourced products. We have collaborated with Sensatia Botanicals on an empty bottle return programme, ensuring even our youngest guests contribute to a greener future.

Waste Management

We have introduced several initiatives to reduce the use of single use packaging in our rooms and suites. In 2024, we have removed 14,1937 pieces of single-use plastics across our operations.

Reusable parachute bags are now used for in-room waste management, whilst paper coasters have been replaced with reusable canvas-fabric ones. Single-use plastic laundry bags have been replaced with reusable nylon fabric, and we are also adopting paper packaging alternatives for tea and sugar packets.

IN THE RESTAURANTS

We prioritise sustainability in our restaurants and kitchens through responsible waste management and organic fertiliser production, reducing environmental impact while supporting local farmers and enriching our gardens.

Responsible waste management

Since December 2023, our partnership with Eco Bali has diverted three tonnes of dry waste from landfill. As a leading waste management company, Eco Bali provides comprehensive waste collection, sorting, recycling, and composting serves, contributing to the preservation of Bali’s natural beauty and the promotion of a circular economy.

Meanwhile, our partnership with Jiwa Garden has saved 19 tonnes of landscape waste from landfill by converting it into biogas. The Jiwa Community Garden, established in 2020 on a previously unused plot of land, serves as a hub for gardening, learning, and promoting sustainable living in Canggu, near Denpasar City.

Supporting local farmers

Thanks to our partnership with Magi Farm, in 2024 we upcycled seven tonnes of food waste into 133 kilograms of organic fertiliser and produced rich protein animal feed through our Black Soldier Fly (BSF) system. This initiative has supported three local farmers, providing a total of 11 tonnes of animal feed.

Reusing and upcycling

We have replaced plastic bags used for landscaping with durable, reusable waste bags, whilst our collaboration with local entrepreneur Ajeng Cinta Bumi has meant that, since 2023, we have upcycled 493 kilograms of milk boxes into beautifully crafted bags, supporting local artisans and reducing waste.

COOKING OIL

We have donated 2,301 litres of used cooking oil to be recycled into biodiesel in 2024, preventing harmful waste from reaching landfills and contributing to cleaner energy solutions.

Eco Enzyme Programme

With the leadership of our champion, Ibu Jumiati Nevi, in 2024 we saved two tonnes of fruit waste through our Eco Enzyme Programme. In August 2024, we donated 613 litres of eco enzyme to Eco Enzyme Nusantara as a first-aid response in disaster areas. This social enterprise, established in 2014, produces eco-friendly cleaning products from locally sourced organic materials, empowering communities to adopt sustainable practices.

Hazardous waste

In 2024, we responsibly managed 170 kilograms of hazardous waste through certified third-party services such as PT Sagraha Satya Sawahita, ensuring the safe disposal and treatment of potentially harmful materials.

EMPOWERING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Through grants, partnerships, and community programmes, COMO Uma Canggu uplifts local communities and preserves cultural traditions while promoting environmental awareness.

Preserving Balinese Traditions

COMO Uma Canggu is deeply committed to preserving Balinese culture and traditions. We collaborate closely with local Pemangku (priests) to conduct daily offerings and provide dedicated spaces for our staff to perform religious ceremonies.

Dressed in traditional attire, Pemangku can be found throughout the day performing sacred rituals across the property. This creates a serene atmosphere, allowing guests to experience the sacred essence of Balinese culture simply by being present in the environment.

Native Plants Conservation Program

We’re actively increasing the percentage of native plants on our property by 10 per cent each year, contributing to the preservation of Bali’s unique biodiversity. You can find these native plants throughout the property, including near the COMO Beach Club and lobby.

Committed to a Cleaner Bali

We actively contribute to environmental preservation by participating in local sustainability initiatives. This year, 180 of our team members dedicated an average of 1.5 hours each to monthly beach clean-up activities, joining forces with neighbouring businesses to protect Canggu’s coastline.

In 2024, we marked Earth Day by donating 135 litres of eco-enzyme to support a river clean-up organised by the Bali Hotel Association in collaboration with Sungai Watch.

EVENTS

Promoting local culture through guest engagement is a cornerstone of the COMO Uma Canggu experience. Guests have the opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic Balinese customs and arts through annual cultural and traditional events.

We have tours of Tanah Lot and Canang Sari Making as part of our regular schedule of activities. and once a year we hold an Ogoh-ogoh celebration as part of Nyepi (“Silent Day”) which we encourage guests to participate in. We also celebrate the traditional Balinese new year blessing Melukat, which cleanses your soul in preparation for the year ahead.

COMO Challenge Grant

In 2024, we extended our support to Yayasan Sole Family Bali with a contribution of US$5,932. This organisation focuses on community outreach, medical intervention, food aid, education, and disaster response. Their initiatives provide essential support to the sick, poor, disabled, and marginalised individuals throughout Bali, regardless of age or background.

Our fundraising efforts included an auction and padel competition, during which we raised awareness of our chosen charity to attendees.
