IN THE RESTAURANT
Our restaurant and kitchen initiatives prioritise sustainability through responsible waste management and organic fertiliser production, reducing environmental impact while supporting local farmers and enriching our gardens.
Responsible Waste Management
We are committed to preserving Bali’s natural beauty through sustainable waste management practices. Our comprehensive programme includes responsible disposal of residual waste, recycling partnerships with Magi Farm, and a zero-waste food initiative.
Since partnering with Magi Farm in 2024, we have upcycled 18.2 tonnes of food waste, producing 700 kilograms of organic fertilisers.
We have partnered with a third party organisation to recycle our used cooking oil, sending 1253 litres to be processed into biogas, and in 2024 we responsibly managed 30 kilograms of hazardous waste.
Organic Fertiliser and Compost
Our garden thrives on organic fertiliser created from food waste, saving 18.2 tonnes of food waste from landfill and producing 700 kilograms of nutrient-rich fertiliser. Additionally, we’ve supported eight local farmers by providing 600 kilograms of Black Soldier Fly larvae as a valuable protein source.
Our in-house garden composting system saved 28 tonnes of landscape and organic waste from being sent to landfill in 2024. This nutrient-rich compost is used to further nourish our gardens and support our sustainability efforts.
RESPONSIBLE SOURCING
We prioritise sourcing fresh ingredients and artisanal products from local suppliers, reducing transportation emissions whilst celebrating sustainable Balinese craftsmanship.
Supporting Local Suppliers
Over 90 per cent of our daily supply is sourced from Balinese suppliers, whilst 100 per cent of our fresh fruits and vegetables come from local farms in Bedugul. Here, products are grown without pesticides, and using natural fertiliser made from vegetable waste.
Local Treasures at COMO The Shop
At Shop by COMO, 85 per cent of our products are locally made, demonstrating our commitment to supporting local artisans and entrepreneurs. Explore our thoughtfully curated collection of unique, sustainable products, each handcrafted by talented Balinese makers.
Empowering local communities
Through grants, partnerships and community programs, COMO Uma Ubud uplifts local communities and preserves cultural traditions while promoting environmental awareness.
COMO Challenge Grants
In 2024, we supported Yayasan Senyum Bali with a contribution of US$5448 raised through a preloved sale and auction. We also invited local food businesses around the property to sell their food.
Yayasan Senyum Bali is a non-profit organisation committed to providing healthcare services for individuals with craniofacial disabilities, particularly cleft lip and palate. Founded to enhance quality of life, the foundation offers reconstructive surgeries and comprehensive supportive care.
HONOURING TRADITIONAL BLESSINGS
A t COMO Uma Ubud, we honor Balinese traditions with daily offerings conducted by a local Pemangku (priest). Dressed in traditional attire, the priest performs sacred rituals across the property throughout the day, fostering a serene and authentic ambiance. This immersive experience allows guests to connect with the spiritual essence of Balinese culture while reflecting our deep commitment to cultural preservation and community well-being.
Native Plants Conservation Program
We are committed to preserving Bali’s natural heritage by cultivating and maintaining native plant species throughout our grounds. From the lush surroundings of Kemiri Restaurant to the tranquil areas near guest accommodations, guests will find a diverse array of indigenous flora, including Ketapang (Terminalia catappa), Beringin (Ficus benjamina), and Asam (Tamarindus indica), thriving in harmony with the environment.
Earth Day
In 2024, we celebrated Earth Day with an impactful event attended by 34 team members. The event featured key speakers from Mudfish No Plastic, who highlighted the dangers of microplastics and the importance of reducing plastic pollution. This initiative inspired our team to take meaningful action towards a healthier and more sustainable planet.
