The Taktsang 'Tiger’s Nest' Monastery is a marvel of architecture, perched on a sheer rock face 3,000 metres above the valley. Arguably the most iconic landmark in Bhutan, this temple is believed to be the place Guru Rinpoche landed on the back of a flying tigress, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan from Tibet. You can also do this route on horseback.
The hike begins near a small temple complex after a 45-minute transfer from the hotel through the bustling Paro Valley. The first 15 minutes are gentle — a slight incline through a pine forest. Soon you reach a collection of colourful prayer wheels, then the tougher part of the climb begins. Though steep at times, the path is well-trodden and you’ll find the Taktsang Cafeteria marking the halfway point, where you can relax and refresh.
