The Dolomites in Winter: Three Perfect Days

AT COMO ALPINA DOLOMITES

Activities 4 minute read

COMO Alpina Dolomites is located in Italy’s Alpe di Siusi – Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine meadow and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a mountain escape with world-class wellness treatments and authentic South Tyrolean food, with much more than skiing to enjoy during the popular winter months.

Winter at COMO Alpina Dolomites showcases Tyrolean hospitality at its finest – welcoming interiors, roaring fires, hearty soups, and warming wellness treatments including local ‘hay’ baths. But there are also myriad activities to enjoy, from horse-drawn carriage rides to sauna rituals. We have designed three perfect winter days at the resort, to make the most of your stay.

Tyrolean Tradition

DAY ONE

Settle into your spacious room or suite, and take a moment to soak in the magnificent alpine views. Then head to Sassolungo – a cosy restaurant at the resort – for lunch.

Once your energy levels are restored, set off on a private horse-drawn carriage ride – a historic method of transport in the Dolomites. You’ll follow a scenic route from the resort to Gostner Schwaige, a nearby restaurant and dairy farm with views of white-capped mountains and meadows blanketed in frost. At Gostner Schwaige, enjoy a glass of hot mulled wine and a selection of artisanal homemade cheeses such as Tyrolean grey cheese or Edelweiss Camembert, before returning to COMO Alpina Dolomites.

A refreshing swim in our outdoor heated pool is a great way to round off the afternoon, with a backdrop of snowbound peaks and skiers returning from a long day on the slopes. For supper, Trattoria Dell’Alpe offers wines, cured meats and artisanal cheeses sourced from nearby villages and inspired by the Veneto’s rich culinary traditions.

Icy Adventures

DAY TWO

Start the day at Sassolungo, with a fresh COMO Shambhala juice and a protein-rich breakfast of cured meats, local cheeses and eggs cooked to your preference – all selected to fuel you through an adventurous morning.

After eating, take an exhilarating helicopter flight to Cinque Torri, taking in views across the Dolomites as you swoop between peaks.  Once you’ve reached Cinque Torri, you’ll strap on your skis for a scenic guided route back to the Alpe di Siusi, following crisp slopes past frozen waterfalls. En route, enjoy a leisurely lunch at Scotoni Hut, a cosy chalet. The bread dumplings and hearty goulash are particularly good, while the apple strudel is a favourite traditional dessert.

Once back at COMO Alpina Dolomites, head to the COMO Shambhala wellness centre for a sauna infusion. Sauna is an important tradition in the mountains; at COMO Shambhala, an ‘Aufgussmeister’ or sauna-master places snowballs infused with essential oils onto heated stones. They then use rhythmic movements to guide the resulting aromatic steam. The ritual is deeply relaxing and can help reduce stress, ease inflammation and boost immune function. Afterwards, try our Skin Detoxifying Treatment. This begins with a purifying hay scrub – another regional practice, using local grasses – followed by a detoxifying mud wrap. As you lie on a heated waterbed, gentle massage jets enhance the absorption of the active ingredients. The treatment finishes with the application of COMO Shambhala New Skin Oil that leaves your skin feeling supple, hydrated and rejuvenated.

For supper, Alpina Chalet Grill and Bar is located directly on the slopes of the Alpe di Siusi and features dishes cooked over an open fire including steaks and gourmet pizzas. The wine list is extensive and the chateaubriand – grilled to perfection – is a particular specialty.

Rising with the Sun

DAY THREE

Rise early to make the most of your last morning, with an hour-long yoga session before breakfast. This wake-up session is specifically designed to energise both body and mind with sun salutations and asanas.

Make sure you allow enough time for a long breakfast at Sassolungo before you leave – either a final nourishing specialty from the COMO Shambhala Kitchen, or a heap of pancakes and French toast to bid farewell to the mountains in style.
