Sustainability

At COMO Shambhala Estate, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From energy conservation to supporting local communities, our initiatives reflect our dedication to preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Bali.

AWARDS

This April, we have achieved the Silver Certification awarded by EarthCheck, an internationally recognised benchmark for sustainable tourism. This accomplishment reflects our dedication to environmental responsibility and our efforts to align operations with global sustainability standards.

ARRIVAL

We ensure a responsible and impactful experience from the moment you arrive, from eco-conscious transport options to thoughtful guides to Balinese culture and traditions.

Greener Transportation

We believe in promoting eco-friendly travel options that align with our sustainability values, helping guests reduce their carbon footprint while exploring Bali responsibly.

Guests can rent high-quality bicycles to explore the local area sustainably, or enjoy convenient shared shuttle services, reducing emissions while ensuring a comfortable experience.

Respecting Our Neighbours

Upon arrival, our welcoming front desk team will gladly share insights into local customs and etiquette. Understanding this code of conduct will help you navigate your surroundings with respect and contribute to a harmonious community.

IN-ROOM

From energy-saving innovations to mindful waste practices, our rooms are designed to deliver luxury while minimising environmental impact.

Water and Energy Conservation

Through the in-room Towel and Linen Card initiative, we encourage guests to participate in water and energy conservation during their stay. In 2024, 97 per cent of guests opted to reuse towels and linens during their stay, conserving water.

Our IPTV homepage features educational content on energy and water conservation, encouraging guests to make small but meaningful contributions to sustainability during their stay.

Mindful Waste Practices

We have replaced plastic laundry bags from our external laundry partner with durable, reusable covers.

We have also eliminated the single use plastic bags formerly used in our waste bins, replacing them with leather reuseable alternatives. This saves 2,850 plastic garbage bags per year.

BACK OF HOUSE

Behind the scenes, we focus on biodiversity to create a lasting impact, promoting the cultivation of native plants and the production of all-natural fertiliser.

Landscape Fertiliser

We create our own organic compost from both landscape and food waste. In 2024, we produced 2.9 tonnes of compost from our in-house landscape composting process, and 85 kilograms from our food waste.

Native Plants Conservation Program

We’re dedicated to preserving Bali’s natural heritage and are actively working to increase the presence of native plants on our property by 5 per cent each year. As you explore our estate, you’ll notice these native plants flourishing throughout our gardens, contributing to the preservation of Bali’s unique biodiversity.

IN THE RESTAURANT

Our restaurant and kitchen initiatives prioritise sustainability through responsible waste management and organic fertiliser production, reducing environmental impact while supporting local farmers and enriching our gardens.

Responsible Waste Management

At COMO Shambhala Estate, we are dedicated to preserving Bali’s natural beauty through sustainable waste management practices. Our initiatives include responsible waste disposal, recycling partnerships with Bali Bangga Bersama, and food waste management initiatives.

We responsibly managed the disposal of 330 kilograms of hazardous waste through certified third-party services.

Food Waste

In 2024, we eliminated the plastic sauce cups used in take away food packaging and replaced them with handmade cups made from banana leaves.

Our collaboration with Magi Farm and the local community has resulted in 9.5 tonnes of food waste being successfully diverted from landfill. This food waste has been transformed into 85 kilograms of organic fertiliser, with an additional 170 kilograms of rich protein created during the process given to small farmers as animal feed.

We send 221 litres of used cooking oil to a third party to be recycled into biodiesel. We also recycle 110 litres of used Ayurvedic oils for use for by the Biodiesel Bus at Green School Bali.

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

By prioritising local sourcing, we support Bali’s economy, reduce environmental impact, and showcase sustainable craftsmanship.

Supporting Local Suppliers

Over 94 per cent of our daily supply is sourced from local suppliers across Bali, with 100 per cent of our fresh fruits and vegetables sourced from Santika Farm in Bedugul. As well as ensuring the freshest possible ingredients for our guests, sourcing locally allows us to support the Balinese economy and reduce transport emissions.

Local Treasures at COMO The Shop

At COMO The Shop, 85 per cent of our products are locally made. We are passionate about supporting local artisans and entrepreneurs. Guests can explore our thoughtfully curated collection of local handmade accessories, handcrafted by talented Balinese makers.

Empowering local communities

Through cultural programmes, environmental initiatives and community grants, we celebrate traditions and uplift our neighbours.

COMO Challenge Grant

Since 2018, the COMO Challenge project has been dedicated to supporting schools, foundations, orphanages, and facilities for the elderly and disabled. Through this initiative, we aim to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need across the community.

In 2024, our support went to Yayasan Bali Baby Home with a donation of US$3,708 raised through an auction, acupuncture treatments for team members, and other fundraising activities. This non-profit organisation is committed to providing care and support for abandoned and orphaned babies in Bali, offering them a loving and nurturing environment.

Partnership with Local Priest or Pemangku

At COMO Shambhala Estate, we honour and preserve Balinese culture and traditions. Each day, a local Pemangku (priest) dressed in traditional white ceremonial attire delivers sacred Balinese offerings throughout the property. Guests can witness this serene ritual as the priest places offerings at key locations, bringing a sense of peace and spiritual balance to the estate.

Waste Management Partnership

We have partnered with Bali Bangga Bersama since 2023, extending our support to the 119 students of SDN-2 Tibekauh through various initiatives and events.

As part of this collaboration, we provide sustainable waste management support, including awareness campaigns, the installation of four Teba Modern units for composting organic waste, and free monthly waste collection services to the local school.

One notable event was our celebration of World Peace Day 2024, where 80 children participated in engaging activities focused on the impact of climate change and how tourism can contribute to a sustainable future. The event combined educational presentations with games and healthy snacks, creating an inspiring and enjoyable experience for the students.

Village Cleaning

Since 2024, we organise monthly village clean ups and waste removal initiatives. In 2024 alone, our team has engaged 147 business representatives around Begawan Village in these activities.
