ARRIVAL
At COMO Castello Del Nero, sustainability starts the moment you arrive. Thoughtful initiatives reduce our environmental impact while enriching your experience.
Reducing paper waste
We’ve embraced paperless check-in, streamlining the arrival process and reducing paper waste. Guests only need to provide their passport for verification and to complete the deposit guarantee process, before being shown to their room. While check-out remains traditional, this small step reflects our commitment to sustainability at every touchpoint.
Sustainable artistry
Our floral decorations are sourced from local florists who embrace eco-conscious practices, including a no-foam policy. These vibrant displays not only brighten our spaces but also support the regional economy and sustainable artistry.
By using flowers that are locally in season, we minimise the carbon footprint associated with importing out-of-season blooms, whilst using hardier varieties such as roses means our displays remain fresh for up to eight days without foam. Partnering with local florists further reduces transportation emissions while supporting the local community.
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
To support sustainable travel, COMO Castello Del Nero offers two EV charging stations, one located at the hotel and another at Villa San Luigi, ensuring guests can recharge with ease while enjoying their stay.
IN-ROOM
Our guest rooms are thoughtfully designed to enhance comfort while integrating eco-conscious features that reduce energy and resource use.
Energy-Efficient Lighting
All rooms feature LED lighting, which consumes up to 75 per cent less energy compared to traditional bulbs, and ensures sustainability without compromising the ambience of our spaces.
We also implemented key card systems to automatically switch off lighting when guests leave, further reducing energy consumption while maintaining convenience.
COMO SHAMBHALA PRODUCTS
We’ve eliminated single-use plastics in our rooms, offering COMO Shambhala products in sustainable, eco-conscious packaging. These thoughtful details allow you to indulge responsibly.
IN THE RESTAURANTS
Our kitchen reflects Tuscany’s dedication to fresh, sustainable cuisine, sourcing ingredients locally and practicing mindful waste management.
Organic Herb and Vegetable Garden
Our estate’s organic garden grows an array of seasonal produce, including 13 varieties of tomatoes, pumpkins, and fresh herbs. These ingredients are used daily, ensuring sustainability and exceptional taste, while reducing the need for external sourcing.
Locally Sourced Produce
We partner with local suppliers like Bacci Frutta, a family business with over 70 years of tradition in Tavarnelle Val Di Pesa. Their dedication to sustainable practices and quality produce ensures we deliver the best of Tuscany to your table.
Repurposing Food Waste
Excess food is repurposed to create meals for our staff in the cantina, helping to reduce waste while fostering a responsible and inclusive culture.
ACROSS THE ESTATE
At COMO Castello Del Nero, we take pride in sustainable practices across our estate, from traditional farming methods to renewable energy initiatives.
Olive Oil and Sunflower Oil
Our estate’s olive groves and sunflower fields produce exceptional oils, cultivated using sustainable methods and without chemical fertilisers. Annually, we produce approximately 300 litres of extra virgin olive oil, while our sunflower fields yield around 50 litres of oil. These oils are integral to our culinary creations and reflect our commitment to Tuscany’s agricultural traditions and environmentally responsible practices.
Our oils are produced through hand harvesting, ensuring minimal environmental impact and preserving the quality of the crops. We exclusively use organic fertilisers to nurture our olive and sunflower crops, avoiding chemical inputs, and rely solely on rainwater for irrigation, further reducing our environmental footprint and conserving resources.
Estate Vineyards
From our 2019 harvest, we produced 9,000 bottles of exceptional wine. Each bottle tells the story of our commitment to sustainable winemaking and the preservation of Tuscan traditions.
Barley Flour Production
In 2024, we produced 50 kilos of barley flour from our estate, showcasing our dedication to sustainable farming and diversifying the land’s resources.
EMPOWERING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
At COMO Castello Del Nero, we believe in giving back to the community that makes our estate special, creating opportunities that uplift the local economy and celebrate its heritage.
Supporting Local Talent and Refugees
We are proud to have received recognition from the United Nations for employing refugees and providing them with meaningful opportunities. Since 2022, we have hired approximately a dozen refugees, integrating them into our workforce and supporting their transition to a stable livelihood.
Furthermore, 70 per cent of our leadership team hails from Tavarnelle or within 20 kilometres of the estate, ensuring our success directly benefits the local community while celebrating its heritage.
Transforming Cigarette Butts Sustainably
Launched on 21 September 2023, the Re-Cig project tackles the environmental harm caused by cigarette butts by recycling them into usable materials. Five dedicated containers across our estate collect approximately 1.8 kilograms of cigarette waste every four months. The waste is sent to a specialised company to be transformed into a plastic polymer for injection moulding and 3D printing.
This initiative repurposes waste into valuable resources while promoting environmental responsibility. Through education and collaboration, we engage our team, guests, and the community to reduce pollution and foster sustainability.
